It was shocking and saddening to know the untimely demise of our dear Shri Avtar Krishan Kaul on 3rd August 2024. A visionary in cinema and a cherished member of the Kashmiri Pandit community, Shri Kaul brought stories to life with his exceptional creativity and perspective.
Born on July 21, 1947, to the late Mr. Sona Kaul, Avtar Krishan Kaul, affectionately known as A K Kaul, pursued his B.Sc. Honours at Panjab University, Chandigarh, from 1965 to 1971, and earned a Diploma in Cinema from the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune, from 1971 to 1974.
His career began at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he served for 20 years, contributing to pivotal projects like SITE, INSAT, and IRS Programmes. Rising to the position of Scientist Engineer SF, he left an indelible mark on India's space research. Post-ISRO, he worked with Zee Telefilms, Delhi, and SpaceTech Consultants, Ahmedabad, and founded A.K.Kaul Communications.
Shri Kaul's distinguished work includes acclaimed documentaries: Understanding our Sun, Space for Development (Silver Prize, ICN, Japan), Glaciers Rivers of Ice, Ek Atoot Aastha, Telecom Vectors & Rural Dynamics (Special Mention, ITU’s Golden Antenna Festival, Geneva), IIMA, Fragile Little Rann (International Award, WWF), Pilgrimage to Badrinath in Himalayas (Zee TV), and Gujarat Cyclone ‘98.
A stalwart of the Kashmiri Pandit community in Ahmedabad, Shri Kaul's dedication to his heritage was unwavering. His guidance was instrumental in preserving Kashmiri culture and supporting the community. Shri Kaul’s heart beat for his community, and his unwavering dedication was evident in every initiative he undertook. He actively participated in organizing cultural events, educational programs, and social gatherings that helped maintain the cultural identity and unity of the Kashmiri Pandit diaspora. He wasn’t just a leader; he was a mentor and a guiding light for the younger generation, encouraging them to connect with their roots and embrace their cultural heritage. His selfless efforts in promoting Kashmiri language, music, and traditions touched countless lives and brought the community closer together. Shri Kaul's love for his culture was palpable, and his legacy will forever remind us of the beauty of our heritage.
Shri Avtar Krishan Kaul will be remembered as a man of immense creativity and passion. His legacy in storytelling and community service will forever inspire us. Let us join together in remembering a life that shone brilliantly and touched many hearts.
